On the 29th May I decided to take Barik to do his first CR at Dukeries, Thorsby Park, Nottinghamshire. I decided to only do a CR with him as he gets venue excitement and I thought an ER might be too much for him. As it was all the horses competing within this class were vetted together and ended up all leaving together at 9am so it very much gave him a chance to see a mass start. To begin with Baz was extremely hyper but once out on route he calmed down. I found that he is happy and comfortable in an extended trot and paces himself much better so we did the entire 80km in that gait. Amber Sole caught us up with her mount, Zoe, and we rode much of the route together. Both Baz and Zoe got on well together and found that their extended trots matched each other well. The first loop we did at about 12kph but once into the vet gate Baz was very hyper and was a handful to hold, so I was given the go ahead by Nan to let him go a bit faster. Second route we did much of it on our own or rode with Gwen Pickering on Martin. Amber eventually caught us up and we rode into the vetgate together. The second loop I average at around 16kph but Barik did this quite comfortably in his long strided trot. Through vetting once again an we were out on the last loop with Amber and Zoe. Both in their extended trots we rode and chatted quite happily along. Both horses vetted fine and we had completed our 80km. Barik had pulse of 52 at every vetting with an overall speed of 14.2kph and gained a grade3 in his first 80km. He was upgraded to Advanced level at this ride.
