Day 3
Yesterday Lucy took me for my first trip into the town of Graaff-Reinet. Having arrived on Thursday and only driven through the town it had appeared very quiet and almost like a ghost town. However, on a Saturday it was very different. Bustling with life as people shopped and chatted with friends, you could hardly move down the streets. Lucy pointed out where different buildings were within the town such as the library, museum, etc and then it was onto the grocery shopping. What I did not expect to find was a Spar in the town so it was into this not so packed shop. Some of the other shops which Lucy regularly shops at had queues so long they were near enough going out the the door.
Back at the farm it was a quiet afternoon spent, which gave me a chance to catch up on the sleep I had missed whilst I had travelled through the night of Wednesday and much of Thursday.
In the evening before supper we took the dogs for a walk, accompanied by Diesel one of the cats who seems to think he's a dog, along through the camp and walked along the river bed. Rivers here are mostly underground unless there is heavy rain and then back to the farm. Along this walk we spotted freshly dug Aardvark holes and Porcupine needles, although we saw neither of these animals.
Day 4
With it being winter here the mornings feel much like a cold autumn day until the sun rises and warms the place up, which the temperature then feels like summer to me.
So Lucy and I were up to feed the animals this morning and I was actually wearing a jumper in South Africa! Rosemary will be joining us later on this morning and we shall take some of the horses out on the trail and will possibly do some stock work which entails checking fence lines and the horses which are out in the pasture camps.
Laura and Bob (Perseverance owners) will be back from Christiana later this evening and I shall have a chance to meet my hosts for the first time as well as here all the news of how the ride Christiana went.
